Core Web Vitals in 2026: Fixing INP, LCP and CLS on Business Websites
INP replaced FID, and many business websites still fail it. Practical fixes for INP, LCP and CLS covering images, fonts, third-party scripts and hosting.

A slow website quietly costs Indian businesses enquiries every day. A buyer on a 4G connection in Mehsana taps your Google result, waits, sees the page jump as a banner loads, taps a button that does not respond, and goes back to the search results. You never know they were there.
Google measures this experience through Core Web Vitals: three metrics that capture loading speed, responsiveness and visual stability. They are part of Google's page experience signals, and more importantly, they reflect how real visitors feel about your site. In March 2024, Google replaced First Input Delay (FID) with Interaction to Next Paint (INP), a stricter measure of responsiveness that many business websites still fail.
This guide explains LCP, INP and CLS in plain language, and gives practical fixes for the kinds of sites we see every day in Ahmedabad and across India: WordPress sites with heavy page builders, custom PHP sites, ecommerce stores and real estate project pages packed with sliders and videos.
The Three Core Web Vitals at a Glance
| Metric | What it measures | Good | Needs improvement | Poor |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| LCP (Largest Contentful Paint) | How quickly the main content (usually a hero image or heading) appears | 2.5 s or less | 2.5 to 4 s | Over 4 s |
| INP (Interaction to Next Paint) | How quickly the page responds visually after taps, clicks and key presses | 200 ms or less | 200 to 500 ms | Over 500 ms |
| CLS (Cumulative Layout Shift) | How much the layout jumps unexpectedly while loading | 0.1 or less | 0.1 to 0.25 | Over 0.25 |
Google assesses these at the 75th percentile of real visits, separately for mobile and desktop. In other words, three out of four visits should meet the "good" threshold for your site to pass.
Lab Data vs Field Data: Read the Right Report
Many business owners run PageSpeed Insights, see a score of 45 and panic, or see 92 and relax. Both reactions can be wrong.
- Field data (the "Discover what your real users are experiencing" section) comes from the Chrome User Experience Report, based on real Chrome users over the previous 28 days. This is what Google uses for Core Web Vitals assessment.
- Lab data (the performance score out of 100) is a simulated test on a throttled mobile device. It is excellent for diagnosing problems but is not the same as passing Core Web Vitals.
Aiming for a 90+ mobile lab score is a sensible target because it usually means the site is lean and well built. But the real goal is green field data. Also check the Core Web Vitals report in Google Search Console, which groups your URLs by status.
Note that INP cannot be measured in a pure lab test because it needs real interactions. In the lab, Total Blocking Time (TBT) is the closest proxy.
Fixing LCP: Make the Main Content Appear Fast
LCP is usually the hero image, a large banner slider or the main heading. On most Indian business sites we audit, the LCP element is a 1.5 MB JPG banner loaded through a slider plugin.
Optimise the hero image
- Resize to the actual display size. A 4000-pixel-wide image displayed at 1400 pixels wastes bandwidth.
- Use modern formats such as WebP or AVIF, with sensible compression. A hero image under 150 to 200 KB is often achievable.
- Serve responsive sizes with srcset so phones download smaller images.
- Do not lazy-load the hero image. Lazy loading is for images below the fold.
- Add fetchpriority="high" to the LCP image so the browser downloads it early.
Rethink sliders
Homepage sliders with five rotating banners are still common on manufacturer and real estate sites. They often load multiple large images and heavy JavaScript before anything appears. A single, strong hero image with a clear headline usually performs better for both speed and conversions.
Improve server response time
- Use quality hosting with servers in or near India, and enough resources for your traffic.
- Enable page caching (server-level or a reliable caching plugin on WordPress).
- Use a CDN to serve images, CSS and JavaScript from locations close to visitors.
- Keep PHP and your CMS on supported, current versions.
Fonts
Web fonts can delay text rendering. Limit families and weights (two families with two or three weights each is plenty), self-host fonts where practical, preload the most important one, and use font-display: swap so text appears immediately.
Fixing INP: Make Every Tap Feel Instant
INP looks at interactions throughout the visit, such as opening a menu, tapping "Add to cart", selecting a filter or submitting an enquiry form, and reports one of the slowest. A poor INP means the page feels laggy, which is especially frustrating on budget Android phones that many Indian users rely on.
Common causes
- Too much JavaScript running on the main thread, often from page builders, sliders and animation libraries.
- Third-party scripts: chat widgets, multiple analytics tags, heatmaps, social embeds, review widgets.
- Heavy event handlers, such as filter scripts that re-render a whole product grid on every tap.
- Very large pages with thousands of DOM elements.
Practical fixes
- Audit third-party scripts. List every script in Google Tag Manager and in the theme. Remove what nobody uses. Many sites still run old Facebook pixels, two analytics tools and an abandoned chat widget.
- Delay non-essential scripts until after user interaction or after the page has loaded.
- Remove unused plugins and avoid plugins that load their scripts on every page when needed on one.
- Break up long tasks in custom code so the browser can respond to input between chunks of work.
- Give instant visual feedback on taps (button state change, loader) before heavy work runs.
- Reduce DOM size by simplifying deeply nested page builder sections.
Fixing CLS: Stop the Page from Jumping
Layout shift is when content moves after it first appears: you start reading, an image loads above, and the text drops down. Or you try to tap "Call Now" and hit an ad that just appeared. It feels careless and causes mis-taps.
- Set width and height attributes (or CSS aspect-ratio) on all images and videos so the browser reserves space.
- Reserve space for embeds such as YouTube videos, maps and ad slots.
- Avoid inserting banners above existing content, such as cookie notices or offer bars that push the page down. Use overlays or reserve the space.
- Match fallback fonts to your web fonts in size to reduce shifts when fonts swap.
- Be careful with animations; animate transform and opacity rather than properties that change layout.
Platform-Specific Advice
WordPress sites
Most WordPress performance problems come from a heavy theme, a page builder, and too many plugins. Choose a lightweight theme, keep plugins to what you actually need, use a well-configured caching and optimisation setup, and convert images automatically to WebP. Test after every major plugin update.
Custom PHP sites
Custom builds can be extremely fast because nothing unnecessary is loaded. Make sure database queries are indexed, output is cached where possible, assets are minified, and images are generated at the right sizes when uploaded through the admin panel.
Ecommerce stores
Product listing pages with filters and many images are INP and LCP hotspots. Paginate or load products efficiently, lazy-load images below the fold, and keep tracking scripts lean. Checkout pages should be the lightest pages on the site.
Real Examples of What We Commonly Find
These are typical patterns from Indian business websites, not specific client results:
- Real estate project page: autoplay background video plus a five-image slider above the fold. Replacing them with one optimised hero image and a click-to-play video usually brings LCP down substantially.
- Manufacturer website in Ahmedabad: product catalogue images uploaded straight from a DSLR at several MB each. Resizing and converting to WebP often reduces page weight by most of its size.
- Clinic website: WhatsApp chat widget, live chat, two analytics tools and a reviews carousel all loading on page load. Delaying or removing them improves interaction responsiveness.
- Restaurant site: menu loaded as huge images with no dimensions, causing layout shifts. Converting the menu to HTML text with reserved image space fixes CLS and helps SEO.
A Practical Core Web Vitals Workflow
- Check Search Console's Core Web Vitals report to see which URL groups fail on mobile.
- Run PageSpeed Insights on representative pages: home, a service page, a product page, a blog post.
- Identify the LCP element, the biggest layout shifts and the longest scripts.
- Fix the highest-impact issues first: hero images, third-party scripts, missing dimensions.
- Test on a real mid-range Android phone on mobile data, not just on office Wi-Fi.
- Re-check field data after 28 days, since it reflects a rolling window.
- Add performance checks to your ongoing maintenance, because new plugins, tags and banners slowly undo good work.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is a 90+ PageSpeed score necessary to rank well?
No single score guarantees rankings, and relevance and content quality matter more. But a 90+ mobile score usually reflects a fast, well-built site, which helps users, conversions and passing Core Web Vitals.
What replaced First Input Delay?
Interaction to Next Paint (INP) replaced FID as a Core Web Vital in March 2024. INP measures responsiveness across interactions during the whole visit, not just the first one.
Why is my lab score good but Search Console shows failing URLs?
Search Console uses real-user field data. Real visitors may use slower phones and networks, or interact in ways that trigger slow scripts. Fix issues based on field data and test on realistic devices.
Will better hosting alone fix Core Web Vitals?
Good hosting improves server response time and helps LCP, but it cannot fix heavy images, excessive JavaScript or layout shifts. Those need changes to the site itself.
Conclusion: Speed Is a Feature Your Customers Notice
